Description
Grown in the Ruhuna District of southern Sri Lanka, Ruhuna Tea is classified as a low-grown tea, cultivated at elevations below 600 meters (2,000 feet) above sea level. The tea estates are located close to the coastal belt, yet benefit from a unique climate that shelters them from the full intensity of the southwest monsoon. Historically a spice-growing region, Ruhuna’s fertile soil and warm, humid conditions now support the rapid growth of tea bushes, yielding long, elegant leaves ideal for producing premium grades like OPA. These leaves wither into a deep black hue and are particularly well-suited for traditional rolling techniques, resulting in a robust, full-bodied liquor with a distinctively rich character and aroma unique to Ruhuna.
