Description
The tea produced in the Uva District is renowned as ‘high-grown’ tea, cultivated at elevations ranging from 900m to 1,500m (3,000–5,000ft) above sea level. Uva’s tea estates are perched along the eastern slopes of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, where they are uniquely exposed to both northeast and southwest monsoon winds. This dual climatic influence imparts a distinctive seasonal character to the tea. Before tea cultivation began, the region—blessed with a cool, dry climate and nourished by mountain streams—supported various traditional crops. The unique terroir, high altitude, and brisk mountain winds slow the growth of the tea bushes, resulting in a smaller, well-twisted leaf with an exquisite reddish hue. Uva FBOP (Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe) is prized for its bright, coppery liquor and mellow, aromatic flavor profile that reflects the region’s highland purity.
